History of the Therapeutic Riding Program at First Impression Farm

First Impression Farms of Lenox Twsp., Michigan currently runs a comprehensive horseback riding facility. In addition to its regular recreational services, it has operated a riding program for the disabled for more than 15 years. It is this service which the owners and operators of First Impression Farms separated into the newly organized nonprofit corporation, Rexford Center for Therapeutic Riding.

Presently, the program is conducted by individuals who are also employed by First Impression Farms; we also have some volunteer assistance. Our current capability does not come close to meeting the needs of the neighboring communities. As our ability expands, we will be in a position to serve a larger population of mentally and physically challenged individuals.

To the best of our knowledge, there are very few, if any, similar non-profit entities organized and devoted exclusively for therapeutic riding. Our non-profit organization was formed to provide individual psychological and educational evaluations, as well as tutoring and therapy for children and adolescents with learning disabilities. The therapy is provided by staff professionals who have special training in various areas.

To make the program happen, it relies on the availability of:

  • Appropriately trained horses
  • A facility to house the horses
  • A facility to house the activities
  • Professional teachers
  • Volunteers
